The Re-use of Modernist Buildings

21 January 2022

In 2022, Riens Smet, the granddaughter of architect Karel Beuten – the husband of Lieve Schellekens and therefore son-in-law of Jozef Schellekens – completed her master’s thesis in Interior Architecture. She focused on the architectural structure and spatial principles of the home of her great-grandfather, Jozef Schellekens.

The house served as a beautiful example of progressive modernist architecture, in which innovative spatial organization and functional aesthetics are central. The study provided deep insights into how Schellekens experimented with open floorplans, sightlines and light incidence, and how these principles remain relevant in contemporary design to this day.

Accompanying her master’s thesis is also a video, which offers a visual analysis of the house and highlights its unique architectural features. This video provides a special look into the legacy of Jozef Schellekens and shows how his design philosophy continues to inspire.
