With the support of Turnhout 2012 – Cultural Capital of Flanders, family, friends, and various partners, powered by Architects In Motion, organized a retrospective exhibition on the life and work of provincial architect, artist, and writer Jozef Schellekens (1909 – 1963).
The exhibition ran from August 31 to January 27, 2013, and took place in the restored modernist masterpiece home of Jozef Schellekens, located at Steenweg op Mol 66 in Turnhout.
The house has since become a protected monument, both inside and outside. The building and interior are still 95% in their original condition and can be considered a ‘hidden architectural treasure’ of modernism from the 1930s. In addition to being an architect, Jozef Schellekens was a gifted writer and artist. Many of his works will be exhibited in the house.
Jozef Schellekens introduced modernism to the Kempen region, paving the way for the 1960s modernism of architects Carli Vanhout, Paul Schellekens, Lou Jansen, Rudi Schiltz, and Paul Neefs, now better known as the ‘Turnhout School’ (Renaat Braem).
