Turnhout’s Modernism on the Path to European Recognition

September 3, 2025

Erfgoed Noorderkempen, together with several partners, has submitted a dossier to Creative Europe to put the modernist heritage of Turnhout and the Campine region on the international map. The application is part of the broader Modernism in the Kempen (MIK) project and focuses on preserving, sustaining and revaluing a unique architectural movement with deep roots in the region.
Even before the post-war boom period, architects such as Jozef Schellekens and Eugène Wauters laid the foundation for a modernist approach that was far ahead of its time. Their work formed the basis upon which later generations could build.
In the decades following the war, Turnhout grew into a hotbed of progressive architecture. Remarkably, several modernist firms were active simultaneously in this relatively small city – with renowned names such as Carli Vanhout and Paul Schellekens, Paul Neefs, Rudi Schiltz, and Lou Jansen. Their realizations – including Master Meubel, de Warande, Parkwijk, and the Saint Victor School – not only shaped the cityscape but also reflect a broader European design language in which light, functionality and social vision are central.
Today, this heritage is under pressure. Many buildings are vulnerable and not always recognised or protected. Moreover, restoration often requires specialized knowledge and commitment from owners. Therefore, efforts are being made at both Flemish and European levels to provide more support and recognition.
Two Levels of Commitment
  • Flemish Level
The city of Turnhout has asked Flemish Minister Ben Weyts for substantive and financial support to create a heritage guideline plan for modernism in the Campine. This plan should be flexible, participatory and sustainable, providing a framework for preservation and revaluation.
  • European Level
Additionally, an application has been submitted to Creative Europe. It focuses on international cooperation around sustainability, repurposing and heritage tourism. The trajectory aims to bring together partners from different countries, exchange knowledge, and position the modernism of Turnhout and the Campine within a European network.
This project builds on more than ten years of preparation:
  • 2012: First inventory, exhibition, and cycling routes with AR-TUR, KU Leuven, and Artesis University College, among others.
  • 2018: Archival research in collaboration with Architects In Motion, VAi, and IOED Erfgoed Noorderkempen.
  • 2022 – 2023: Erasmus+ study trips, public activities, and the publication ‘Walking Along Modernist Architecture in Belgium’ with a route through Turnhout.
  • 2024 – 2025: Launch of the international partnership on sustainability within the framework of Creative Europe.
With these Flemish and European trajectories, the initiators hope not only to secure Turnhout’s modernism for the future but also to promote it as an inspiring example of Flemish and European heritage.
The decision on the Creative Europe dossier is expected by the end of 2025.
