Hoogstraten Town Hall
Vrijheid 149, 2320 Hoogstraten
First Tender: 1945
Works Executed: 1953
File Completed: 1956
The town hall in Hoogstraten was destroyed in 1944 by the collapse of the tower of St. Catherine’s Church.
Jozef Schellekens was the ideal person to handle the restoration. He had already fully measured and drawn the building when he was a pupil of Taeymans and during his student years, for which he won the third Henri Blomme prize (1934). This was a well-documented restoration. Some changes were made to the interior to allow the building to continue functioning as a town hall.
You can even find a self-portrait of Jozef in one of the stained glass windows.
